Pettitte Returns for 2008!!

Postby blankman » Mon Dec 03, 2007 9:37 am

According to the Houston Chronicle, Andy Pettitte has informed friends and teammates that he will pitch for the Yankees in 2008. The Yankees have been informed.

This is a great news for the Yankees, who gain some leverage in the Johan Santana negotiations.

Great, great news for the Yanks. ;-D

Sweet. Now bring Johan in and we stack up as one of the best rotations in baseball.

Santana
Pettitte
Wang
Kennedy
Chamberlain/Mussina

I think we have enough good arms in the minors that something decent will shake out.

Unless Santana ends up in the Bronx, it won't matter. They still can't win in the playoffs without a true 'Ace' in the rotation, and wang and petitte aren't true 'Aces'. Santana in Boston is the worst thing for New York since giving Clemens 28 mil to suck.

He's no savior, but he's a solid pitcher. Check out his second half stats, and that might make you feel better:
3.85 ERA, 11-3

I just think this decreases the desperation level for the Yanks. I think they can go with what they have if they need to: Pettite, Wang, Mussina, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy (one of them moving to the pen and ready to step up when someone goes down) with their offense, and they have a solid chance at the playoffs for sure.

No ace yet in that mix, but two pitchers with potential to become aces, two grizzled veterans (let's hope Mussina finds some life in that arm again), and the reliable Wang. Please oh please don't give up Hughes!!!!!!

Check out this scouting report on Hughes from last year, BTW:

Did the Rockies have an ace last year?

You don't need an ace to win in the playoffs. It helps, sure, but plenty of teams have won without an ace. As of now, the Yankees have pretty much the same team they had last year...a team that won 94 games despite an abysmal start. They've also got 3 young pitchers with more experience under their belts.

I'd say as is, the Yankees have a decent shot at going toe to toe with the Sox for the division, and a great shot at the wild card. If they add Santana, those odds only go up.

From an outsider's perspective looking at their team on paper, I see no reason not to call them the favorites with the Red Sox for the World Series, just like it is every year.
