My boss has asked me to compile a list of the top 50 or so Rap/Hip-hop and R&B songs of the 1990s. Unfortunately, my musical tastes rarely line up with the mainstream, and I didn't spend much time in the '90s listening to radio or watching MTV, so I know I'm overlooking some stuff, and discounting some truly bad songs that inexplicably became hugely popular in favor of songs that were merely somewhat popular, but were actually good songs.
What are some Rap and R&B songs from the 90s that make you nostalgic? The kind of songs that everyone immediately recognizes and most everyone can sing along to (at least the hook).
I stopped listening to radio in 1998 when I realized you couldn't get any decent metal out of "The World Famous" KROQ and I outgrew my punk phase.
Don't know much about rap and R&B myself, but with 2Pac and Bone Thugs n Harmony being so popular in my middle school days, I remember California Love (2Pac), To Live and Die in L.A. (2Pac), Thug Love (Bone Thugs), and Crossroads (Bone Thugs) fondly.
In no way a top 50 song, in 1996, I thought the Fugees' Mista Mista was the funniest thing I ever listened to.
Ice Ice Baby-Vanilla Ice Baby Got Back-Sir Mix-a-Lot Poison -Bell Biv Devoe My Perogative-Bobby Brown U Can't Touch This-Mc Hammer Hip Hop Hooray- Naughty By Nature Gin and Juice-Snoop Doggy Dog (parental advisory) Big Poppa-Notorious B.I.G. (parental advisory)
These are just a few that I remember. I'm sure others will come up with more.
After that, there's plenty of choices. Just off the top of my head....
C.R.E.A.M - Wu Tang Clan Method Man - Wu Tang Clan Rosa Parks - Outkast Nuthin' But A G Thang - Snoop & Dre So Whatcha Want - Beastie Boys Sabotage - Beastie Boys Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince Respiration - Blackstar & Common
Sometimes it takes a crazy person to see the truth. If so, I'm a freaking lunatic.
Oddly enough, I just heard that song again about a week ago. How bad is it that I still remember the entire lyrics after all these years?
I've actually got that Digital Underground cassette tape (! !) buried in a box with more tapes somewhere.
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
