I used to be heavy into collecting. Once things starting become like a stock game, I quit. It makes me sad, I have PSA 10 graded Sosa, McGwire, and Griffey RC cards. Should have sold them before the steroids BS went down. :~(

I still collect and do enjoy it. Just don't get wrapped up in the up and downs of the hobby and it is still quite fun.

The grading side of things is a bit of a joke. As stated before too many people have friends who do the grading and giv them favorable grades, for an extra buck or two. I once purchased a PSA 10 card and when I got it, it had an obvious scratch on the front surface of the card. Graded cards are a scam.

I once found two copies of that Killebrew card in a box of commons for a couple bucks a piece. Probably my single greatest coup from my collecting days. At least in terms of a purchase. The best trade I ever made was when I traded my 7th grade English teacher the Robin Ventura 1990 Leaf at the absolute apex of both the 1990 Leaf craze and the Robin Ventura craze for two George Bell rookies (Topps and Fleer, I believe). Then I flipped the two George Bell cards for a Dominique Wilkins 1986-1987 Fleer, which I later sold for $110.

I think '91 or '92 was the last year I collected.

I remember buying up a bunch of Brian Taylor cards and then he turned into a huge flop.

My Mattingly Rookie card is still my favorite
I'm too lazy to make a sig at the moment

You guys DO know we have a baseball card & memorabilia section right? :-b

And although I buy a pack here and there, that entire hobby is dying due to the aforementioned gimmicks that drove the kids out. My all time fave card: The 84 Fleer Glenn hubbard with the boa constrictor around his neck. ;-D

I'm helping my 8-year old get a collection going. Haven't gotten into any card shows or even stores yet. Just pick up a Topps pack once in while when we're at the store. Missed out on meeting David Wright... :-b

There's a Joba Chamberlain card going for $1,000 right now. Something like 17 bids have occurred.

JOBA MONEY

My fave cards? Maybe two inserts from the '95 Pinnacles Zenith Edition...an ARod and a Jeter Rookie Roll Call.

Also have a rookie ARod which I pulled from a card store bin for $1. It shot up to $100 in "value" and currently I have no idea what it sank to.

I have the entire 1995 Bowman set, pulled pack by pack. It was very hot and has the Andruw Jones and Vlad rookies in it.
My Friendliness bar...recently shrunk from 11.3 to 10mm long!!

Trying to get back to the topic...

Back when the McGwire craze was going on someone put up a 1989 Score Mark McGwire and in the title called it a rookie card. It sold for something ridiculous - between $65 and $70 I think.

That year a guy at a card show told me he remembered one day before the craze a guy was coming around to the dealers trying to unload a 400 ct box full of '85 Topps McGwires. He passed :-b

This thread was the first thing I thought of when I saw the Ellsbury to Minn rumor.
