Preparing for 2008

Preparing for 2008

Postby kalibernc » Mon Nov 12, 2007 12:50 pm

A beginner here...

My plan is to join a couple Roto Leagues for the 2008 season. Besides the Cafe here, what are some other good sources for player information and rankings?

And any advice you can give in participating in a Roto league would be appreciated.
Sometimes you've got to specifically go out of your way to get into trouble. It's called fun.

I dont know if you want free services or subscription but here are some

I listen to the Fantasy 411 on MLB TV, Mike Siano and Cory Schwartz are very insightful and give helpful advice in a friendly manner.

If you want some minor league news then Baseball America is the way to go in my opinion

Rotoworld.com is nice, and if you want some help seeing what certain player values are at that moment then go to protrade and enter the player stock market. If a players pricegoes up it means his value is rising in the eyes of the public and it s a helpful roundabout tool to predict player spikes early.

Those are just a few off the top of my head, some more indepth places like pecota are also available.

I also listen to the 411 at MLB.com, and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Its completely free and will send your fantasy knowledge threw the roof.

411 is ok, but they get on my nerves sometimes. I like the podcast from BaseballHQ better.

For websites, I like:

BaseballHQ
Baseball Prospectus
Baseball America

Also, look into the Baseball Forecaster and Baseball Prospectus books.

If you have XM radio there is a show on channel 175 called Fantasy Focus from 12 to 1pm Mon-Fri (it replays at midnight I think) usually starts in Feb and goes through the whole season. It's hosted by Jeff Erickson from rotowire

Yes. I like that show on XM much better than 411. Right now it is pretty much football, but during baseball season, it is a solid show.

It might be helpful to do a couple practice mock drafts if you are going to do a live draft online. I've only inherited a team or did a auto list draft several years ago (I'm back to fantasy baseball after several years off). I did a live mock draft for the first time on Tuesday and it's not as easy as you would think. I made some bad choices because I didn't have my lists prepared correctly (among other things). Good lessons learned now instead of in an actual draft.

I used http://www.mockdraftcentral.com on Tuesday and it worked pretty well. You can do up to 3 free mock drafts per week.

I'd also suggest the podcasts on ESPN.com. They are pretty entertaining in their own right, and they generally have pretty decent information.
