In relation to SS available, what about eckstein as a ray?

Good defensively and could be a good sparkplug in the #2 hole and in the middle of our lineup

I havent heard that he re-signed with the cards so what about that and then trade Brignac for some pieces to our BP or something later on.

I really like the idea of signing him. He is a guy that fills the defensive spot we need at SS and is great at leading off. I would like to see him as a Ray personally

What? Eckstein? First off, we don't need any more leadoff hitter types, and secondly, Eckstein is not good defensively.

He had a bad year last season but throughout his career he has been pretty good defensively at SS

2001 .971 FLD% 15 E
2002 .977 FLD% 14 E
2003 .984 FLD% 8 E
2004 .988 FLD% 6 E
2005 .981 FLD% 15 E
2006 .989 FLD% 6 E
2007 .960 FLD% 20 E

Not bad except for last year defensively

I guess the guy has a good World Series last year, and his stock jumps. :-b
Don't look at the number of errors, look at his range. He is pretty good at not making errors on balls that are hit to him, but his range is suspect and given his age will not improve. The last 3 years combined, Eckstein is not even in the top 12 for defensive shortstops and that is counting his 06 season with a .989 FLD %. We would be much better off with Craig Counsell as our starting SS then making a bid on Eckstein. Counsell is much better with the glove, and hits about the same as Eck as well. Please Stu, do not sign Eck to play SS. I have a feeling at the end of the year, we would have been better off with a complete season of Upton at SS. :-°
