My sister moved from Toronto to Richmond VA this summer and she just told me that they don't recycle and they have garbage pick up 2 times a week.
That seems kinda crazy. Toronto has been recycling for about 10 years now so it seem almost second nature. Now we have to compost. Compost pickup is every week and we alternate recycling pick and garbage pick up every week so that garbage is now picked up only once every 2 weeks.
We aren't allowed to throw out compost (anything biodegradable) or anything recyclable in our garbage.
Is this just Richmond or is it similar in other places?
Lincoln, NE recycles as a city, but only glass, paper/cardboard, and #1 & #2 plastic.
There are other companies here in town you can pay to pick up your recyclables, and they take a far greater variety of stuff than the city, but I have a problem with paying someone for something they're going to turn around and sell.
I'm pretty surprised that any major metropolitan area in this country would NOT recycle. Get with the times, people!

I've never known anything different. We have recycling, but we have to pay for it.
Our city has recycling every other week. The city provides the bins to people. Most people are pretty good about recycling...there's usually a lot of bins on the sidewalks on recycling day when I walk to school.
I have lived in Eastern North Carolina my entire life, and I couldn't even tell you where the nearest recycling center was. I know where the land fill is and where the trash dump site is but that is it.
