I really enjoyed the His Dark Materials trilogy.
I think that the parallel universes/religion/God aspect to the books was an interesting take on how our lives are/could be if things were just a little different.
***SPOILER ALERT***
It's hard for me to believe that Pullman has no concept of the spirit, as that is what the Daemon's of Lizzie's world seened to be.

More publicity even if bad = more book sales. I had not heard of them but they sound interesting, I might give them a try.
I agree with Mookie and everyone else. Da Vinci code was like a shallow action movie in book form, which of course is what a lot of people want...
