CINCINNATI (AP) -- Left-hander Eddie Guardado is close to reaching a contract with the Texas Rangers, who could use some experience at the back of their bullpen.

The 37-year-old reliever became a free agent when the Cincinnati Reds declined to pick up his $3.5 million option for next season. Guardado is making a comeback from reconstructive elbow surgery in September 2006.

Josh Phelps signed a Minor League deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday receiving an invitation to big league Spring Training.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Mike Cameron reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year deal Friday. According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Cameron would receive a $1.25 million signing bonus plus a $5 million salary in 2008. However, he will be suspended the first 25 games of the season for testing positive for a banned stimulant, and won't be paid for those games, which means the salary will be reduced to $4.22 million. Milwaukee also hold a $10 million option on Cameron for 2009 with a $750,000 buyout, according to the Journal-Sentinel.

The Oakland Athletics on Friday signed Emil Brown to a one-year contract for the 2008 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Marcus Giles has reached a tentative agreement on a Minor League contract with the Colorado Rockies.

Sources say the Atlanta Braves have agreed in principle to send right-handed reliever Joey Devine to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Mark Kotsay, who is expected to undergo a physical in Atlanta on Monday. If he passes the exam, the trade could be announced later that afternoon.
