How legit are these surprises?

I'll agree with the other 3 that have been mentioned. (Phillips, Markakis and Granderson). I'm almost tempted to say Byrnes could reproduce these numbers next year, but he seems too streaky to be reliable at all.

yes, usually i won't be tempted by guys who sign new contracts, but byrnes actually managed to raise his SB rate after signing the contract i think. he stole 33 in the 2nd half although vs the 17 in first half although his average dipped. i think byrnes is one of those guys who can only play in one mode, all out so i don't think i'll group him as one of those guys who take it easy after the new contract. however, i don't see it likely that he top his 07.

one thing that worries me is that after arizona moved him to the 3 hole from leadoff, he didn't perform quite as well in terms of power and average (for some strange reason, he stole almost double the bases as a 3 hole hitter than leadoff). he was at his best as a leadoff man in 07, and since chris young will likely keep the leadoff spot it worrys me a bit that byrnes will be in the 3 hole.

ultimately, i think byrnes is best maximized by selling him high by the AS break, just like bonderman.
