The Giants did the same for Bonds. It seems to be the new way to say we have money for the next guy. Expect a few more. Torii Hunter comes to mind.

I don't see it that way. I think it would be a lot worse to lead Andruw on if they know they aren't going to be able to sign him. Telling him now let's him start making plans rather than dragging the whole thing out.

I agree. And since they brought him in and told him to his face, well, you really can't expect much more. I can;t think of anything worse than hearing it from the papers. I think it shows a lot of respect and courage to tell him so directly.
