Otherwise, the whole premise of the game is for me to "hamper" the play of others, i.e. me finishing ahead of them...

I always get a kick out of these situations where everyone is 100% on one side or the other. That's my view. Trying to win is the whole point of this game. Just sitting back and letting someone catch you for no reason doesn't sound like fantasy baseball to me but hey.
