CUBS ON PACE FOR UNPRECEDENTED STRIKEOUT REIGN
The Chicago Cubs pitching staff currently leads the major leagues in strikeouts with 1135 entering Friday's game. While the Dodgers (1123) and D-Rays (1115) are within striking distance, the Cubs solidified their lead by punching out ten Pirates Friday afternoon.
If the Cubs maintain this lead, it will be an unprecedented seventh consectuive year at the top. They currently share the record of six straight seasons with the 1903-08 Philadelphia Athletics and the 1958-63 LA Dodgers.
During this run, which began in 2001, the Cubs have broken the all-time strikeout record twice, once in '01 and again in '03, when they broke their own record with an astounding 1404 Ks. Carlos Zambrano and Kerry Wood are the only two Cub pitchers to contribute in each of the seven seasons.
