Cubs pitching on pace for record

Postby The Big Train » Sun Sep 23, 2007 1:03 am

... and it's not for futility.

CUBS ON PACE FOR UNPRECEDENTED STRIKEOUT REIGN

The Chicago Cubs pitching staff currently leads the major leagues in strikeouts with 1135 entering Friday's game. While the Dodgers (1123) and D-Rays (1115) are within striking distance, the Cubs solidified their lead by punching out ten Pirates Friday afternoon.

If the Cubs maintain this lead, it will be an unprecedented seventh consectuive year at the top. They currently share the record of six straight seasons with the 1903-08 Philadelphia Athletics and the 1958-63 LA Dodgers.

During this run, which began in 2001, the Cubs have broken the all-time strikeout record twice, once in '01 and again in '03, when they broke their own record with an astounding 1404 Ks. Carlos Zambrano and Kerry Wood are the only two Cub pitchers to contribute in each of the seven seasons.

The Cubs currently own six of the top 13 single season strikeout marks:

1. Chicago Cubs 2003
1404
2. Chicago Cubs 2004
1346
3. Chicago Cubs 2001
1344
4. Chicago Cubs 2002
1333
5. Arizona Diamondbacks 2002
1303
6. Arizona Diamondbacks 2001
1297
7. Arizona Diamondbacks 2003
1291
8. Los Angeles Dodgers 2003
1289
9. Houston Astros 2004
1282
10. New York Yankees 2001
1266
11. Boston Red Sox 2001
1259
12. Chicago Cubs 2005

Let's hope for Mark Prior's sake Dr. Andrews totally fixed his shoulder and Prior can contribute to hopefully making it 8 straight years.

Pretty impressive considering how often Prior and Wood have been on the DL.

Personally, I think our staff has been pretty worthless over the past six years, so I'm not that impressed with this "record."

Give me wins over K's any day.

I'm also inclined to think the biggest conclusion one can draw from this is that K would appear to be overrated.
