Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Orlando Hudson will have season-ending surgery on Monday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. Hudson injured the thumb while sliding head first into third base Tuesday night. He played with the injury Wednesday, but left the game in the seventh inning and has been out since. "It's not an injury you can play with," manager Bob Melvin said. "It's the right thing to do. We hoped it would get better but it really needs surgery. It's the type of thing you want to do right away."

Sep 8 Hudson faces the possibility of season-ending surgery on his injured left thumb, the East Valley Tribune reports.

Recommendation: The Diamondbacks were careful Friday to say that a determination on Hudson's future will be not be made for a few days. Surgery would require a six-week rehabilitation period. “It’s a scenario,” Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said of surgery after meeting with Hudson and team doctors again Friday. The Diamondbacks are waiting for the swelling to go down to determine if Hudson has enough mobility and flexibility to wear a glove and swing a bat, which likely will be a final test. If Hudson’s thumb does not respond, surgery is the next option
