Good read here by Clark Fosler...
A New and Improved Zack Greinke?

Very good 5 hit, no walk, no run, 5 K performance against the Tigers last night.

Is he back in the starting rotation, working up his pitch count through the end of the season?

Yeah, he'll likely stay in the rotation for this last month. He has said that being in the bullpen has really helped him realize that he can throw harder as a SP as well and keep his control. With that said, he's said many many times that he doesn't like to just be out there every 5 days so until I see him put it together for a month or two then I'm not buying that he will consistantly go out there and be any good. This guy is a head case and scares the crap out of me whenever he takes the mound. With that said, heres to the "new" Greinke!! :-o

Thanks, I was hoping you'd chime in with some insider info. I wish the best for the guy, I'm gonna keep an eye on him. Image

Yeah, I am excited to see him this last month because like I said above.... he plans on taking that 96-98 mph fastball he had in the bullpen and use it more consistanly as a SPer. His previous starts as a SP he was anywhere from 90-94 and only rarely threw harder than that. I'm curious to see if he wears himself out after 4 or 5 IP going max effort. So far so good with his first couple starts!

Maybe his inconsistency has something to do with the fact that he missed a lot of time?

even though he's throwing harder, the same problem that was his main problem is still here. He just don't miss enough bat, you watch his starts, he'll get to a 2-2 or 3-2 count, and whether he's throwing 96 or 91, guys will still foul off a bunch of his pitches. So far he's not gone too far with his starts(3ip and 4ip I believe) and the 4ip outing took something like 71 pitches, and that's definitely not good. I think he can be very good, but honestly, I don't know what's wrong with him. His spinning stuff does get a bit flat(slider and change) and he doesn't throw a curve enough, but again, he hits the mid 90s and has above average control. I don't get how he isn't missing more bats. I mean Matt Cain miss more bats with a fastball alone.

My bet would be an easily trackable motion. I haven't seen him pitch recently, so I can't say for sure, but if hitters can follow your motion and release point, they can figure out where the ball is going. That's why pitchers who don't throw as hard but have deceptive motions will miss more bats.
