Where are all the third basemen???

Postby unclepaulie » Thu Feb 12, 2004 11:25 am

I think that there might be more quality players at the catcher position than there are at 3rd base this year, or at least the drop off isn't so steap. After the big four (Rolen, Chavez, Lowell and Glaus) there really isn't anyone who stands out with the exception of Blaylock and maybe ensberg. What has happened to this position? Is it wise to spend a top 4-6 round pick on one of these higher tier guys?

2 Eric Chavez
3 Hank Blalock
4 Mike Lowell
5 Miguel Cabrera
6 Mark Teixeira
7 Morgan Ensberg
8 Bill Mueller
9 Shea Hillenbrand
10 Aramis Ramirez
11 Joe Crede

I grabbed this list from sportingnews so don't flame me for the order they are in!

Do a search for the (numerous) threads on this topic.

Third base is the deepest position out there (considering that you only have to start one third baseman and 3 of).

If you don't get Rolen or Chavez, you are safe to wait until the end or your draft to select a third baseman. Blalock, Hinske, Ramirez, Koskie, Crede, Hillenbrand, Ensberg, Lowell, Tex, Glaus, Mueller and Cabrera are all fine starters and you may even do ok with Alfonzo, Randa Burroughs or Beltre.

You're joking right? 3B is one of the deeper positions this year.

I forgot about Lowell, but this is not a deep group by any means. If you don't snag the top 4 or 5 guys good luck!! And if your league negates for strikeouts these guys really blow! In a 10 team league someone will be starting a Rolen or a Chavez while another will be counting on a Cabrera or Hillenbrand to equal out the prodution, take your chances.

3B is not an issue this year at all. Plenty of talent availiable. I won't be using a top pick on a 3B.

top 4 or 5?

***Ballpark figures. I won't use my actual projections until after the draft if at all***

Teixeira is projected to hit .280 with 30 homers
M-Cab is projected to hit 290-20-100+
Aramis is projected to hit .275-35-100
Mueller is projected to hit .300-15
Ensberg .280-25-80

that's pretty deep in my opinion.
