AT&T is really the only one getting hurt here. I'm sure that Apple would love to open up their market to users from all carriers. There really isn't much AT&T can do except pressure/sue Apple until they find a work around. All they can really do right now is void warranties, stop users from updating the phone (which will be cracked I'm sure), and introduce more features that are available only through the AT&T network. They can't really go after the end users (except perhaps the ones that are selling the hacks) thankfully.

im assuming at&t has a contract with apple to be the only network allowed to have the iphone for a year or two. if the contract is not respected, im assuming at&t will be suing apple in someway.

This has been done many many times before but I'm unsure if the method has been so vocally projected in a long time as to the step by step method so the common man can do it, because these phones are sold. There are many people and sites advertising "unlocked phones", including Iphones. I guess with the open source revolution in technology, we really can't be surprised.

Apple has is at fault in this with lax software and hardware that allows people to unlock the Iphone. Apple would probably come up with a countersuit about AT&T networks but I can't imagine what details that would include.

Yeah, it's a sold piece of equipment. The only "punishment" the owner should have to endure is loss of warranty coverage.
