While his overall numbers are bad, lets not forget that before these last two starts Mussina had a really nice stretch of about 11 or 12 starts. Roughly a 3.80 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. Not great but not terrible.
I think the only way he loses his job is of he gets completely bombed in his next start..... and even then they may give him one more chance. For better or for worse the Yankees will have to deal with Mussina next season so I think he gets every chance to stay in the rotation.

11 of his last 15 starts have been quality or very near quality starts. When he's been hit it's been pretty hard. Not sure why he would be in danger of losing his position.

Igawa's actually been OK in AAA, although he's been giving up HR there. I'd take Mussina if I was the Yanks...

I'd be pretty surprised to see Moose lose his rotation spot outright. He certainly won't lose it to Igawa, DeSalvo or Karstens, who are much worse. Joba won't be in the rotation this year. If the Yanks are really losing faith and are getting desperate to win games for the playoff push, I could see a 15-day DL stint for a "tired arm" if they're really confident that Kennedy can win them an extra game or two. But most likely, I think they'll stick with Moose.
He's no longer at a point in his career where he's a consistently dominant pitcher, but he has stretches where he's very good and stretches where he's very bad. At a certain point in the next year or two, he'll stop having stretches of being good, but I don't think he's quite there yet, and I don't think the Yankees think so either.

I don't see how they can possibly keep Mussina in the rotation. I know Kennedy isn't all that great, but he can't do much worse than Mussina so if they are set on not starting Joba this year, they should go ahead and give Kennedy a shot.
