Scot Shields

Anyone else in a holds league, with that category riding on Shields' shoulders? If so, it's been a rough couple of weeks. Shields seemingly has lost his pitching mojo. Then his manager states he isn't using him in "hold" situations for a while, and he gets shelled by the Yankees tonight. His "mechanics" workouts don't seem to be doing much.

Aug 21 Shields threw a 15-minute bullpen session before Monday's game to straighten out some of his mechanics, the Orange County Register reports.
Recommendation: Shields believes all of his recent struggles are mechanical, not mental. "I'm going out there and being aggressive with all the confidence in the world," he said. "Of course it (stinks) that I have to deal with it. You guys are putting a lot more emphasis on it than I am. I don't think it's a big deal."

They're downplaying this, but looking over Shields' career, he's been the model of consistency. The highest ERA for a single month was just 5.05. This August it's 13.50 %-6 (in 9 appearances).

During one of the yankees games, they showed a graphic that proves that Scot Shields is historically worse in the 2nd half, probably due to fatigue. His era was always in the mid 3's in the 2nd half, which is not bad, but bad for him. Lately he just hasn't been able to throw strikes, or quality strikes. I also think it's mostly mechanics and will get straightened out. I don't think they will stick with Speier as the 8th inning guy because he doesn't have overpowering stuff. When Shields is going good he has a lot better stuff than Speier so I wouldn't drop him, unless Broxton is available in your league.
