San Diego starting pitcher Chris Young, who missed two starts with a strained left oblique, left Tuesday's game with tightness in the lower back after pitching only five innings.
The malady is believed to be connected to the oblique injury that landed Young on the 15-day disabled list. The Padres will likely know more on Wednesday regarding Young, though he could be headed back to the DL.
Young allowed four runs in five innings against the Mets (71-53), and he left the game after throwing 64 pitches, even though he said he could continue to pitch.
"The oblique strain is a tough injury," Padres manager Bud Black said. "You are able to play. Subconsciously, you might favor it. In this case, Chris' back has been under stress."
Young said his back first started bothering him in his first game back from the DL on Aug. 9 in St. Louis. But it wasn't much of an issue in his next start on Wednesday in Colorado, where he threw six scoreless innings.
But on Tuesday, Young said the pain in his back prevented him from cutting loose with his fastball. Consequently, his velocity was down.
"It's not letting me go 100 percent," Young said. "It's the life [on the ball]. I'm 84-88 mph, and I'm normally 88-92. ... It's just not quite there.
"I didn't have anything like this before. ... Whether I changed something mechanically subconsciously, I don't know."
The thought of losing Young to the DL again is certainly a sober one for these Padres (66-58) as they now head into the final six weeks of the season, especially at the beginning of a six-game road trip that takes them to Philadelphia after three games in New York.
This couldn't have happened at a worse time. With the playoffs starting next week Im now down two starting pitchers and can't pick up anyone b/c roster moves were frozen as of last weekend. I am likely forked
I need to vent for a second and my reply is exactly the type of post that I'm going to b!tch about, but I have to say something...I see a post titled "Chris Young and DL possible" with 4 replies...so I think that there will be some relevant posts concerning the situation about Chris Young and a pending trip to the DL...instead, there's the original post which is helpful, but the remaining replies are just some people complaining about how terrible it is to possibly lose Young and how they're getting hit with the injury bug. I never would've guessed that losing one of your top pitchers around playoff time would be tough...we've all gone through the injury bug (on one team I've lost Sheets, Victorino, BJ Upton, Young, Smoltz, Ortiz, Weeks and Ervin got demoted, etc, etc, etc)...but life goes on...anyway, this isn't directed at anyone in particular, it's more just a vent about irrelevant posts...this very one included.

I understand your vent but this is after all a "fantasy baseball forum"
People here have a vested interest in Young so much of the talk is going to be how the injury affects "their" team.
Maybe check Rotowire or the SD Padres website if you don't want to have to sift through all the personal banter
Here's an update, doesn't say that much though:
Chris Young: Will Get Back Checked Out by Specialist - 8/22/2007 3:01:21 PM
Update: Young, who left his start Tuesday with tightness in his lower back, flew to San Diego on Wednesday to see a specialist about the injury, the Padres' official site reports.
Recommendation: Young will miss his next scheduled start Sunday, but beyond that it is not known yet whether he will land on the 15-day disabled list. Stay tuned.

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com Thursday, August 23, 2007 Update: It looks like Young (back) will avoid the DL, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Recommendation: He is expected to miss his scheduled start on Sunday, but could return on Aug. 31. "They came up with a couple spots on his back that might be the problem as far as pain and soreness. They'll treat him in San Diego the next day or two. This doesn't look to be long term. I don't think it's going to be a DL thing," said manager Bud Black. Wil Ledezma is the leading candidate to start Sunday's game, followed by Tim Stauffer.
