Brad Mahony decided to tackle a tricky subject in his debut Point of View article: evaluating prospects. It's not quite as easy as printing out a cheat sheet, but a bit of common sense and research will help you separate the fantasy future stars from players who'll contribute on the diamond, but not in your league's standings.
When the author stated that good baseball players do not automatically make good fantasy players and vice versa, he had me...hook, line, sinker.
I've been spouting this kind of stuff for years now.
Along the same lines, guys that know baseball don't automatically translate that knowledge into being good fantasy players. I'm sure that I have played leagues with guys more knowledgeable than myself. I'm sure I smoked 'em, too...left them in the dust. Those guys...they just don't get it, either! They can't understand why they finish out of the money. Must be some causative agent at work...I've seen it over and over as player and commish.
Part of it, I feel sure, is a reluctance to embrace new & different thinking. Part due to understand their metagame. Part due to to dare I say, forgetting the principle of Achaams(sp?) Razor. {As if many here know it} Part due to just being 'guys'.
I can hardly finish a response about quality of a guy when I get slammed for my methodology. Fantasy baseball is only about quality and quantity, plus fun.
Perhaps there should be a new form of sabremetrics...maybe 'fantametrics' to study. It would have to encompass how to read stats, how to apply stats, and perhaps wholly new stats for fantasy sucess.

I love to hear the MOANS and GROANS of my competetors when I take their draft pick one round too early.

Isn't that spelling in itself a violation of Occam's Razor?

Agreed - never underestimate that factor...

This is definitely something worth pursuing. I think you've hit on something here, or at the very least, coined a great word.
"One should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything."
Yes doctor, I am sick. Sick of those who are spineless. Sick of those who feel self-entitled. Sick of those who are hypocrites. Yes doctor, an army is forming. Yes doctor, there will be a war. Yes doctor, there will be blood.....
I'm sure that I would have murdered the quote as aptly as I did the spelling.
I can hear 'guy' now. "What the hell does that have to do with anything?"
No problem . I did some research on Occam's Razor in high school.
It's quite amazing how many different ways that the principal is spoken of now without a lot of people realizing where it originated from.
I guess the most common one used is the "KISS principal" which is "Keep It Simple Stupid".
I agree with Arlo, 'fantrametrics' is a great idea. Maybe a book idea for you?

Lots of intriguing candidates, but Kazuo Matsui has to be considered one of the favorites...
