BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) -- Former major league All-Star Jose Offerman was charged with two counts of second-degree assault after hitting the pitcher and catcher with his bat during an independent minor league game.

Offerman posted $10,000 bond and is due in Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 23, court officials said Wednesday.

Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League, homered in the first inning of Tuesday's game. The next inning, he was hit by a pitch from Bridgeport Bluefish starter Matt Beech and charged the mound with his bat.

Offerman hit Beech in the hands and struck catcher John Nathans in the head with the bat. There was no immediate update on the condition of Beech or Nathans.

Offerman batted .273 during his 15 seasons in the majors. He last played in the majors in 2005 with Philadelphia and the New York Mets. He was an All-Star in 1995 with the Dodgers and 1999 with Boston.

I dunno just how bad it was but anytime you swing a bat at someone it sounds pretty bad. Hopefully no one was hurt too badly but I was surprised to see that one guy was hit in the head. If I saw a player charge someone with a bat in his hand I'd be like "is he actually planning on using that?"
What an idiot. :-t

That's crazy and uncalled for.

I can only hope there is some jail time involved here.

Assault and battery with a deadly weapon not to smart.

Did that thug Delmon Young get any type of legal action against him when he threw the bat at the ump?

Not to defend "that thug Delmon Young", but flipping a bat in the direction of an ump is quite different than swinging a bat at someone's head.

That's true but that situation could have been a lot worse. The bat was thrown with enough velocity that it probably would have re-arranged the umpire's face had it hit him there.

Wasn't there another incident in the 40's or 50's where a major leaguer attacked a pitcher with a bat? I was thinking Roy Campanella was involved but I can't seem to find anything about it when I search.

Here is a screen cap

He wacks the catcher on the backswing and then goes for the pitcher. A real low class move. I'd have more respect for him if he ran up and kicked the guy in the nuts. That should pretty much end his career.
