Tigers to sign Porcello to record $7.3 million deal
Posted by Danny Knobler August 13, 2007 23:16PM

DETROIT -- First-round draft pick Rick Porcello has agreed to sign with the Tigers.

Porcello, the team's first-round draft pick in June, will get a record $7.3 million guaranteed over a four-year major-league contract. The team hasn't announced the deal, but several baseball officials confirmed it Monday.

The contract will be the biggest ever guaranteed to a high school player signed out of the draft, and one of the largest for any drafted player.

Just about to post this. Questionable to give a HS'er a MLB deal, but I guess they might as well give it to the highest-profiled prep arm since Josh Beckett. Probably the #1 pitching prospect in the draft (yes, ahead of Price), so I don't blame the Tigers for giving him what he wanted to get him to sign.

The thought of Verlander, Miller, Porcello, Bonderman is scary.

7.3 million? 8-o Porcello said he wanted the money and boy did the Tigers deliver. 8-o I can't wait to see his development through the Tigers system over the next 2-3 years.

I guess the Tigers don't believe in TINSTAAPP...

The D-Rays must be POed cause now it is going to cost them an arm and a leg to sign price.

It's likely to assume that Price is now asking for a ML deal with $10 mill guaranteed. Pretty ridiculous, but with Porcello getting $7 mill and a MLB contract, can't blame him.

Wieters is looking for a Teix like deal from '01 when he was the 5th pick, and the Orioles don't seem to be budging. That really sucks.

I think the slot for the first pick was somewhere around 5.5 million, and the preliminary reports that I heard about a few weeks back stated that the Drays and Price had agreed to a 8.2 million contract, which would have to be approved by MLB since it is overslot. It will be interesting to see that with the Porcello signing if Price asks for a bit more, and maybe pushes the Drays to the 9 or 10 million range. I guess we will find out sometime tonight.

Thank you Mike Illitch... Porcello is nasty. And with the NHL having a salary cap, he can put all the money he needs to into the Tigers.

Back to back drafts getting possibly the best pitching prospect in each.. LHP Miller, RHP Porcello, I'll take it.
