Tell Me About Jacob McGee

Postby RyanK » Fri Aug 10, 2007 7:16 pm

Saw his stat line today and was pretty impressed. Was wondering if anyone on the board knows much about him.

In high A this year he put up:
5-4, 2.93 era, 116 IP, 39 BB, 145 K, .203 Avg against, 1.07 WHIP

at 6-3 and left handed, looks like a nice prospect.

Hey RyanK, I haven't been around in awhile, but I'll give you a heads up on this kid. He's going to be good. Orginally thought to have the ceiling of a #5 guy in the rotation or 'pen, he has really blossomed since being drafted in 2004 and is now viewed as having the ability to be a #2 starter in the bigs, which is huge for the D-Rays, as he could complement Kazmir and David Price as a triumvirate of power leftys at the top of a rotation as early as 2009.

Physically, he's added 2 inches and 20-25 lbs of muscle to his frame, and the projectability issues that came with him when he was drafted have gone away. His fastball now regularly sits at 91-94, and his secondary pitches have plus potential as well. Additionally, he's only 20 years old, so his ability to command all of his pitches to both sides of the plate will only improve, and if you can believe it, he already has polished command due to the fact that he was more of a control pitcher coming out of H.S. when he was drafted, when his fastball only peaked at 86-87.

Hope this helps.

McGee has a tad more potential than Wade Davis who has looked great as well. McGee is a power lefty who does have the makeup to be a top of the rotation guy. He recently went up to AA with Davis and both have looked good there. The Rays have a 200 minimum IP between AA and AAA that he will have to meet before coming up, just like Davis will. He has great stuff and seems to be getting better with time.
