How does Doug Davis have an ERA under 5.00???

Postby tinfoilxtouch » Fri Aug 10, 2007 7:51 am

He's been on fire, so I thought about picking him up. Then I saw...

2:3 ratio of K/BB
14 HR in 146 innings

Shouldn't those type of numbers punch a ticket to a 5.00+ ERA and a demotion to AAA?

Seems guys like him and Cain are breaking all the given rules on ERA this season, much later than most people start to come back to what you'd expect.

Davis has always been a WHIP killer, but his ratio of BB:H is high, and he is fairly good at stranding those runners. For whatever reason, he can get away with more men on base...

His XERA for the year is 5.06.

His ERA is being deflated by an anomalous strand rate:

It is worth nothing, though, that his strand rate is historically high. Maybe he should be a closer. :-D

All I know is that after my ERA/WHIP contributions this week by Curt, Ollie, Bonderman, Zambrano, and Yo:
Code: Select all
        IP       ERA    WHIP
Curt:   6.0      6.00   1.50
Ollie:  5.0     10.80   2.00
Z:      5.2     11.12   1.94
Yo:     2.2     37.13   5.63
Bondy:  6.0     10.50   2.17

...I had nothing to lose by gambling on a spot start by Doug last night. He rewarded with me with a win, 7 innings, 3 Ks, a 2.57 ERA, and 1.14 WHIP.

I'm overjoyed. (And, believe it or not, I'm still in first in my roto league.)

I did watch part of the game last night and he did get out of a couple of jams. He had men at first and 2nd with no outs, and ended up escaping. He also walked the leadoff man a couple of innings.

He's giving up less than 5 ER per 9 innings! ;-)

But really I guess a lot of it comes from the unusally high "runners stranded" percentage that was mentioned above. A few key defensive plays probably have helped him along the way.

I remember a local Spring Training interview here in Phoenix where he said fans here would have to get used to him. That he does put a lot of guys on but doesn't give up many runs and gives his team a chance to win. Apparantly he understands that this is his MO. He always looks like he's grinding.

his Opp SLG% is .399, or roughly the same as halladay (.389), oswalt (.394), and santana (.394). lots of baserunners but he just isn't getting hit hard

Maybe he should always pitch from the strech.

Lefties who nibble on the outer half of the plate always have better ERA's than their stats suggest. Same has held true for Glavine his entire career. Power lefties almost always pay for their walks, finesse lefties seem to get away with it in the long run.
