Minor League Deal

Postby Big Pimpin » Wed Aug 08, 2007 7:10 pm

Trying to clear some bullpen space so I can bring up guys I like better... Very deep league (28 teams, 25 man rosters)

The deal:

Matt Thornton (White Sox MR)
Shin-Soo Choo (AAA DL for Cleveland)
Emiliano Fruto (now a SP in AAA for Nats)

for

Jeff Mathis
Brett Sinkbeil (Marlins' 2006 first round pick)

Thornton is useless to me. Fruto has not been very good as a starter, though he's had a few good games. But at 23, he's got time to pan out. Choo is 25 and has never stuck in the majors. It seems that he's got talent but I wonder if he'll just be a AAAA guy forever. Mathis interests me quite a bit and Sinkbeil is a guy with good upside. I have Clement in the minors, but adding Mathis would allow me to shop Clement, and people definitely like him.

Any thoughts?

6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other is about how I feel about the trade. The one piece that interests me is the part about Clement becoming tradeable if you can land Mathis. If Clement can land you something very useful in return, then do the deal to get Mathis. Sinkbeil is a ways away but he could help you in the future even with his lack of Ks so far in his young career.

Sounds like you want to do the deal, and I say do it, especially if you can get a good piece for your other catcher.
