Can anyone tell if it's really just the amount of graphics that adds up, or if it's the problem of a busy server that's slow when answering requests?
(Possible way to tell: the first page you view will always be slower because the graphics are loaded for the first time. But the next page should be much faster because most images are already stored in your own cache.)
We already introduced a hard limit that restricted avatars to 6kb and sigs to 10kb. Maybe that's not enough? Or how about a check box in the user profile where registered members can chose NOT to view other people's sigs and/or avatars?
Either way, maybe it's time to get a server upgrade.

I dont know anything about servers and things like that but to me it seems like it really slows down or almost comes to a complete stop when there are alot of users on line. For example yesterday when I posted the message about 50 users were signed in and as soon as a few leave everything is back to normal until there is a large number who are back in the forums.
There will come a day when Barry Bonds leaves baseball, and everything about the game will be the better for it.
I like your idea about the graphics option if that is the problem. I can't remember how bad it was on the Football Cafe earlier in the year an hour before the games started (when there were normally between 80 - 120 people on at once). Maybe it was a little slow trying to get into posts... I have a feeling it's a traffic issue rather than the graphics, because I would say the Fantasy Football guys had even more signatures than the Baseball guys have.

Guess it's both. Although I'm on a cable connection I can still remember the "good" old days when the Cafe pages came crawling through my modem line. On the other hand, when you come and visit the Cafe at 4 in the morning and you notice it's much faster than during the day, then quite clearly it's a traffic issue.

yeah. I notice that sometimes I have to wait and wait for my post to go through and i'll click it a couple of times and then there will be like 3 posts that I have to go back and delete.
I'm used to it though.

I've never noticed any traffic problems at 50+; on the football side, I had the impression that things might be a bit slower than usual at 110+ or so, by I only noticed that once or twice so it might just have been a random net slowdown.
I don't think it is really a traffic issue because I have the same thing happen on the football side when there are only like 5 people on. It could be a graphics thing but your regulations on sigs are very tight...I haven't seen an avatar that's over 4k though. To get it to 80x80 it is hard to have awesome quality so most aren't 6k. Mine is only like 3, I think.
I don't mind it slow, I would rather see all the graphics than have it be faster. LBJackal, you're just jealous because you don't have one.
I don't know what the problem is, I would be more on the side of that graphics are the problem since I have the problem on the football side too. Although, my DSL has been runnin a little slow at other places too... Time to get cable or T-1

As I have been paying more attention to this I have found that it has been running pretty fast just browsing the forums but when I hit submit on a post it sits there for a while. I haven't double posted though.

I have DSL and the Cafe does move noticabely slower at high traffic times. I have gotten to the point where I just avoid these times altogether and look through all the posts at night, or early afternoon.

Yeah maybe it's not the graphics at all. Most of you guys' pictures and fancy stuff like that should be in my cache anyway since I look at a lot of posts. It seems to be posting messages that takes a while. Nothing drastic, just thought I'd point it out. I notice that on most message baords though, like the free ones from ProBoards. They're really quick earlier in the day, but from about 6PM to midnight, it's slow as hell. I have a LAN connection at university and it also varies depending on how many people are online. Sometimes I can download a 700 MB movie in under 2 minutes Sometiems it takes half and hour to download a song
