Will the Devil Rays call up Evan Longoria soon, or wait until September?

I thought with the trade of Wiggington the Devil Rays would call up Longoria to split time at third with Iwamura and DH.

Any news on Longoria being called up soon?

If he gets called up this year at all it'd probably be as a september callup.

He's in Durham...cool - I get to see him play on Saturday...visiting some friends.

Devil Rays promoted 3B Evan Longoria to Triple-A Durham.

The third overall pick in the 2006 draft, Longoria batted .307 while leading the Southern League with 21 homers and 76 RBI. He could see Tampa Bay in September.

I think we'll see him, but from what I've read the callup time will vary. Durham is in a playoff race (something like 2 games out.) If they're in contention, I can see him stay there a little longer until the year is over in early September. Either way I think they'll want to get his feet wet with some ML experience and give him a chance to win the job at 3b next year.

I think with Wigginton being traded to the Astros, the D-Rays are setting him up to be called next season for sure. Earlier this season during spring training they had Iwamura playing at 2B and that could be his position next season if and when Longoria is called up.

He's ripping the ball in AAA, any chance he gets a look before September call ups? What is the earliest he could get called up, and though nothing is ever set in stone, how sure a thing is it that he'll get at least a look in September?

There really wouldn't be too much of a reason to have him up in september anyways unless they'd want him to get some major league ABs because it's not like the D-Rays are in the wild card race or anything. hah. I think he'll have to wait until next season for the call up.

Trying to make the playoffs, as you imply, is NOT the only reason for september callups. If your arguement were reality instead of fiction then there'd be no reason for any team not in a playoff race to call up players in september. In reality teams not in playoff races do call up players in septemeber, probably to get a look at them with an eye toward the next season. I might be wrong, but I believe the penalties, such as arbitration counter, aren't affected by sepetember callups, or at least not to the same degree as a pre-september callup, otherwise they wouldn't happen. A possible reason for that is september callups don't have to be placed on the pre-september 25 man roster and remain on the 40 man roster, which I believe is the maximum september roster size. At least that would be my guess, anyone know the rules on this stuff for certain?
