Closer situation in ..Boston?

Postby Whisp » Tue Jul 31, 2007 4:05 pm

I have Papelbon and Gagne. I need to know which one will be closer! Anyone know?

I don't think anything's been announced, so I am thinking it is still Papelbon.

There's really no reason for the Bosox to make a switch. In fact, I am unsure why they really wanted Gagne with Okajima doing a fine job in the 8th inning role.

It would be cool if they replaced Tavares with Papelbon in the starting rotation and closed with Gagne.

a lot of boston's moves are "so the yankees can't." i wonder if that's the case here.

i dont have anything offical, but it is going to be paps
i am a red sox fan, and there is no way that they take papelbon out of the closers role this season (and probably ever at this point)...there is absolutely no chance that he goes to the rotation
gagne will be a seventh/eigth inning guy for the sox, giving francona a lot of flexibility in the pen, allowing for someone like timlin, or delcarmen to come in in a tough situation and bail the team out, and okajima can come in to pitch against a tough lefty some games where gagne can pitch the eigth, and he can continue in the setup role
you can never have too many solid arms in the bullpen

finally, i would bet that part of this move was the fact that it blocks the yankees from getting him, as he would have really helped that pen

That's what I was wondering considering it seems like they made it known they weren't trading Okajima. Seems a little weird they'd have 3 top-end guysin the bullpen and have Tavarez starting. Although Schilling is supposed to be coming back soon.

i agree, but that is wishful thinking. then again, papelbon does go through a starter's warmup everytime he wants to pitch.

It'll still be Paps. This obviously destroys Gagne's value and a little bit of Okajima's. Okajima will likely not see another save opp with Gagne picking up the slack when Paps needs rest.

Paps is solid as closer and now they have a killer set up duo of Gagne and Okajima. Their staff will only get better (now that's scary) when Schilling returns.
