They're thinking future again here. They see raw power and hope that he can develop into a stronger hitting Miguel Cairo. Now I can't see what's wrong with the Miguel Cairo that they have for the rest of this season, but I'd imagine there's more to that.
Plus Proctor caught Torre burnout after last season. They're scared that he'll go the way of Quantril and Sturtze and they won't get anything for him. They wanted to dump him while he has value.

The Yanks are good in scouting talent so i think they know what they're doing.

What's wrong with Miguel Cairo? Dude's got a career OPS+ of
76.I love the Betemit pickup. He's a talented hitter, walks a bit, has some pop. He's a heck of an upgrade over Cairo. Great trade for Cashman.

I didn't like to see Proctor go, but Torre ruined him.
Betemit looks like a great pickup

He's young too.
