Gary Sheffield has started taking grounders at third base. While you can't expect him to start there very often, if at all, keep a close watch on any possible playing time he gets there during the spring. Playing the infield can only make Sheffield more versatile and valuable.

The Mets intend to hit Kazuo Matsui in the leadoff spot and Jose Reyes second. This could hurt the offense early in the year. Matsui will strike out a lot and could struggle to adjust early in the year, while the still-developing Reyes might have some trouble moving runners over.

There will come a day when Barry Bonds leaves baseball, and everything about the game will be the better for it.

I had these Scott Engel (CBS) updates for breakfast a few days ago. They must be slightly stale by now :-D.

I hadn't checked cbs in a day or 2. I thought it was intresting about Matsui hitting ahead of Reyes though.

I'd think Matsui is still a question mark....I wouldn't put too much faith in the early lineup thoughts.

I think I like the idea of Matsui at leadoff. Should increase his base stealing opportunities.

Even with Sheff taking grounders, and even if he plays there a bit... he won't play 15 games.
I'm back. Sorta.

Yeah, makes a lot of sense... late in a game with a one run lead Torre puts in a defensive specialist to replace Sheff in RF and moves Sheff to 3B. How much did he really improve his defense? :-? For some reason, I just don't see that happening enough times to get Sheff to 15 appearances at 3B.
