The Red Sox are on the verge of winning the Eric Gagne sweepstakes, pending his approval and a review of his medical records, according to major-league sources.
Gagne must waive his no-trade clause to Boston for the deal to be completed. It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer's role with Jonathan Papelbon.
This is what I was talking about. This isn't going to happen is it?
Probably just to keep Paps fresh for the playoffs so he doesn't fade like last year. He will still get the majority of the ops, but I wouldnt be surprised to see Gagne get a few save chances when Paps has already pitched 2 or more times in a given week. Gagne should get a few more saves than the average set-up guy from here on out.

yeah, bosox bought out his performance bonuses so he'd waive his NT clause. anyone else think that he'll be like another okajima, grabbing a save opp here and there with good ratios? would this make him roster worthy?
Wow so the BoSox are paying 5.6 million for an 8th inning guy. The Sox pen seems pretty stacked now. Someone else brought up a good point, were the Sox more inclined to do this knowing if they didn't get Gagne the Yanks likely would've? Essentially losing in both the Clemens and Gagne sweepstakes?

Actually, 5.6M for TWO months (hopefully 3) of an 8th inning guy. Yikes! I'm sure they were at least partially motivated by the Yanks also wanting him - not necessarily because they didn't want to "lose out on the sweepstakes", but because the Yanks REALLY needed him. He's almost a luxury to the Sox, beefing up the back end and giving them a backup for Papelbon. The best part is that they can now really baby Papelbon and Gagne to make sure they are both around for the rest of the year.

Well Donnelly is out for the season with TJ Surgery which is another reason they got this deal done
Brendan Donnelly will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his season. The Red Sox weren't counting on getting Donnelly back. Considering they're paying him just $1.4 million and only gave up Phil Seibel, who has since been released by the Angels, to bring him in, they have no complaints over his 20 2/3 innings of a 3.05 ERA. They'll probably non-tender him and offer him a minor league contract in the offseason.
