It's kind of funny that on separate threads one player gains 20 pounds and it's a good thing and on another a player loses 20 pounds of muscle and that's a good thing. When it was reported last season about Abreu's weight gain people assumed his power would increase. It didn't. We'll just have to see about Helton.

Sounds like he just got fat. How could that possibly lead to more HRs? Downside only as it increases injury risk.

A little extra padding helps prevent injuries

You never want to see a guy with extra fat, only bad things can happen, especially when bad backs are involved. Colorado has got to be pissed about this.

If it was 20 lbs of fat he put on then I don't understand his comment, "I am strong like a bull"...but then it says he followed a less strict diet program?

Fat or Muscle, either way he's a lot more solid then he was, and he never specified that he was STRONGER, just strong like a bull. Which he could already have been prior to the weight gain.
I don't like it one bit...Unless he seems to be back to normal weight come Spring Training I'm staying away.

I recall also reading that he expected to lose 6-8 pounds during spring training.
Overall, I don't see it as being to big of an issue. This guy can hit and the fact that he plays half his games at the launching pad of Coors Field is simply icing on the cake.

I have to doubt that Helton would be making "strong like bull" comments if it were not muscle weight he gained. After his back issues of the last year or two, I'd interpret that to mean that he got his arse in the gym during the offseason and added a little muscle to his frame.
Course, he may be looking like Brando after raiding a Milky Way factory....only spring action will tell.
