Jul 25, 2007
A 12-year-old girl has died in Grand Rapids, Mich., from injuries she received in an accident during a softball drill.
The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press said Wednesday that Maggie Hilbrands was hit in the back of the head by a softball this week while training, and later died from related injuries.
The girl's mother, Jan Hilbrands, said her daughter was knocked unconscious while practicing with her softball team Monday. She died the next day from a brain injury.
"She missed the ball. It appears it hit her in the wrong spot. She never regained consciousness," the girl's mother said.
The death shocked Jim Valentine, the police chief of the city of Lowell.
"It's absolutely devastating," Valentine told the newspaper. "You think of the hundreds of thousands of kids out there playing softball, and how many times one gets hit in the head. A lot of times they're just have a bruise and they're back in the game. This is just a tragedy." (c) UPI
