1st pick advice

Postby newbie » Sat Feb 07, 2004 6:58 pm

Hello all-
I know this seems like a no brainer, but I have a question about whom to take with the first overall pick

One of the points leagues I am in has really favors closers, giving them 10 points a save. I tried to have the rule changed this year but to no avail. Last year Gagne blew everyone away with 832 total points. ARod last year had 727 points. Do I ignore every mock draft I have ever seen and draft Gagne #1? My fear is that by the second round at pick #24, I will be hard pressed to get a crack at a top closer where I should not have a problem getting a SS in the likes of Edgar, Jeter, Tejada, Furcal later in the draft. This is a 12 team non-keeper league. Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks
newbie

Looks like you have to take Gagne.

There will come a day when Barry Bonds leaves baseball, and everything about the game will be the better for it.

i would go with gagne as well, cant deny 832 points just because he is a closer... plus there are only 4 stud closers and everyobe will porbably be looking for one of them so u shud take the cream of the crop now

That's a very interesting setup.

I would concede and have to pick Gagne. And if by some chance he is drafted 1st overall, then perhaps Wagner.

Ahhh, I hate leagues like this. That favor one position. It takes all the fun out of the 1st pick and the draft in general. Like this fantasy football league that I was in. QBs were heavily favored and of course the first pick was Peyton Manning, and that team cruised to the title. I just don't like it.

agreed. you probably have to take gagne. but i personally dont like league like that. points leagues in general are very quirky and easily exploited. the points system that tsn ultimate Fantasy bb uses is very fair, but that is not a draft game, its market based.

I am in a similar league where saves are worth the same as wins. We also give 5 points for complete games, 2 points for innings pitched and 5 more for shutouts. This helps balance out the players. Gagne was still the top point getting in our league at 832 and the top hitter was Pujols at 754. People tend to forget just how good gagne was last year, 55 for 55 will generate a lot of points. Having said that, I still would pick arod and hope for Smoltz, Rivera, Dotel, or Wagner in the second round. You could also load up on offense while everyone else picks closers.
