ROY- Jason Bay?

I'm reading my baseball weekly and it says:
" Last year in 121 games between triple A and the majors he batted .299 with 24 hr's 74 bb's and 26 sb's. He may approach each of those totals this year and the Pirates will give him every chance to do so"

This name is totally foreign to me. Is he likely to see 500 ab's this season?

Bay is a good, young player, but 500 at-bats is an unknown. This is the lastest I've heard about him, from Baseball Prospectus, Under the Knife (by Will Carroll):

"I'm not trying to be cryptic, but I'm getting a lot of odd, nearly conflicting information on Jason Bay. A big part of the Brian Giles deal, Bay had shoulder surgery to correct a small SLAP tear in his throwing arm. Without going into specifics, I have yet to be able to confirm Bay's recovery--reports just haven't added up, or followed the normal labrum surgery timeframe. I'm following this one closely and would love for the Pirates to explain what's going on more clearly."

So he's young, unproven, and has a possible injury. Too risky to draft, in my opinion.

Bay should be good to go for the season, although he hasn't done anything related to baseball since his surgery. He's very excited to go to spring training and be a starting major league outfielder (from an interview on Fox Sports Pittsburgh tonight). As far as I can tell, he should be the LF for my Pirates this year. He was pretty good in the few games he played last year. He has some power and will get his share of doubles - home runs I'm not sure about. If you need someone in the late rounds, I think he's a good pickup. I think ESPN has him rated as a top young outfielder. Here's a link:

I would take a chance on Bay in the latter rounds of a draft. It sounds like he has a lot of potential.

I worry about his shoulder for the first month or so, but the guy has a ton of talent. I could very well see a 25-20 player in the near future. He'll also hit for average. A poor-mans Abreu, is what you'll get.

If he could put up these kind of numbers he should win ROY.

And don't forget about that 2 HR, 8-RBI game he had last September. The potential to hit 25 HRs this year is certainly there, but I am not very opptimistic on that total.
