jon lester - worth stashing on your bench?

Postby CecilFieldersChoice » Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:32 pm

Lester just got dropped in my league and I was wondering if he has any value whatsoever. Is he still hurt, is he pitching in AAA, and is he even going to compete for a spot when hes healthy? I have a lot of injuries (smoltz, randy johnson, josh johnson) so i would love a sleeper for late in the season. whir

Depends on what you league and who else is still available, but the Red Sox don't seem in any rush to call him up. With a 10 game division lead it's not like they need to call him up.

For all of the reasons mentioned above, I don't think he'll get called up before roster expansions. If there is a need for him to take over a starting pitcher spot, he'll put up above average numbers for a rookie, but not Liriano type numbers. I'd expect a good winning % and K's, the rest will be so-so.
Good luck.

Lester had a 5.52 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in June. 14BBs and 18 Ks in 31 IP. I highly doubt he gets called up any time soon. I think Chicago RedSox is right, he won't be in the majors until rosters expand.

i don't think so. he really wasn't that good in limited duty last year, just lucked into some wins. he hasn't been pitching that great at AAA. the redsox don't really need him yet, even if they thought he might help.

I had Lester stashed for the first half of the year waiting on them to call him up forever. I regretfully had to drop him about week or 2 ago because I could no longer waste a roster spot on him anymore ...so I picked up Kenny Rogers instead. I live in the Boston area and all the local media and sports talk radio I hear around indicates to me that he's not coming up anytime soon. He hasn't pitched well lately in the minors either so that's not helping his cause ...there is even some rumblings of a Clay Bucholdz call up before Lester gets his.
