Now how long is it before Buchholz is in a Boston uniform? The right-hander — who is 7-2 for Portland with a 1.77 ERA, along with 116 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings — was promoted to Pawtucket last night.
“My [Double-A] manager called me and said, ‘I might not see you again,’” Buchholz said. “So I’m taking that to mean either he’s getting fired or I’m going up to Triple A.”
And maybe higher. On his ESPN.com blog, Peter Gammons reported that the Red Sox may begin grooming Buchholz for a relief role — much as they did with Jonathan Papelbon in the second half of the 2005 season — and bring him up to Boston in six weeks. He would go back to starting in 2008, but would give the Sox another power arm in their bullpen for September and beyond.
