Whatcha think? It happened with Abreu. Anyone think this is a possibility? Any predictions of power surges from any of these guys in the 2nd half?

Sure wish Maggs would have given it a shot either way, maybe it would have WOKE UP his HR swing.
I think that Abreau was probably the true worst case scenario however.

I bet one of the eight guys who played in the HRD will have a powerless second half and everybody will blame the HR derby.

Most of the participants continue to hit home runs afterwards... Abreu and Wright didn't, so now everyone thinks there's a curse.

I think the homerun derby messing up swings is a myth with no real basis in fact. It's doesn't look much different then batting practice. Does batting practice mess up swings? If you really think it can mess up swings then you have to conside the opposite, that it can improve swings. Some players, like Howard last year, actually improve after participating in the HR derby. I think and major change is simply coincidence.

I'm hopeful that Vlad's dingers increase because of winning the contest, but that's ^ right... there's no basis for the contest affecting their totals in the 2nd half. But, I can't help but thing there's a mental aspect to it... gaining more confidence, being pissed off because you had a poor showing, etc, etc. It's a stretch to think so though.

Itd be interesting to see how many HR derby participants have suffered (power-wise) in the 2nd half but if Howard is any indication from last year (30 HR's after the break), I wouldnt be too worried about any of those guys.

I read an insider article on espn either yesterday or tuesday that though statisitcs basically debunked the whole idea of a curse. While in most hitter groupings there was a slight decrease it was usually less then 50pts in OPS, sometimes far less then 50 pts, a few times it went up. So no, the curse is just a myth.
