Your thoughts on Guthrie

Postby kingmike74 » Sat Jul 07, 2007 9:32 am

I have had Jeremy Guthrie reserved for 3 weeks becuase I already have a good staff.

How do you think he fares for the second half. I would love to pickup a "buy low" guy off waivers like Ibanez or even Rolen but I am afraid that Guthrie will continue with his great run.

Personally, I consider Guthrie a good second tier starter and in most matchups, he's worth starting. If you're desperate for a hitter, try the trade route first because if you drop Guthrie, someone else will benefit.

I packaged Guthrie/Jeter/A. Gonzalez

for

M. Holliday and Rollins

I already have Teixeira at 1b, and was able to pick up Laroche from the WW immediately after the trade. I also have Johan, Sheets, Halladay, Ol. Perez anchoring my SP.

I would not drop Guthrie. Attempt to package him in a trade and if that doesn't work, you can try to deal one of your other more established pitchers.
C: Barrett
1b: Teixeira
2b: Upton
SS: Rollins
3b: Braun
OF: Soriano, Lee, Rios
Util: Holliday
BN: Atkins, Hart, A. Jones

SP: Santana, Halladay
RP: Putz, Papelbon
P: Lincecum, Ol. Perez, Bush
BN: Gallardo, Sheets(DL), P. Martinez(DL)

You should see a small decline but I think he's still an above average starter for the rest of the season.

My favorite starter, chills out in the back of my rotation and tosses solid low WHIP games while my opponents keep rolling out their Barry Zitos

On any other team he would have at least 9 or 10 wins but his lack of run support thus far has been ridiculous

Try to trade him for a bat. He's not a complete fluke, but he should regress a lot in the second half. He's a good sell high if you can find someone who thinks he's this good.

and your opinion is based off what exactly?

please share,
because people on this message board are quite annoying,
if you're going to give your opinion at least add some reasoning.

90% of this place is absolutely baseless arguments with uninformed personal opinion thrown around far too often.

the positives?

guthrie has incredible movement on his 2 seam fastball that sits in the mid 90's
and he can dial up his 4 seamer to 97-98 if he needs to,
a really really nice breaking slider and a solid 80+ mph change he can throw for strikes.

he's a very smart pitcher who knows what he is doing,
and really seems to be growing with mazzone on his side.

other than his odd development,
his control has been an issue, but that seems to be much improved.

the negatives?

baltimore. other than leo, it's kind of bleh.

innings. even though he's old for a rookie, he still hasn't thrown tons of innings.
so don't be surprised if at some point he hits a wall with a tired arm.
especially considering he pitched winterball.

he's been a bit lucky, but he's still looking like a #2 type pitcher,
i don't think he's going to regress any more than chris young or danny haren will.
