KINGSTOWN, N.C. (AP) - A quick-thinking 5-year-old boy grabbed a rabid fox by the neck and pinned it to the ground during a family cookout in North Carolina, protecting six other children before his stepfather could step in.
"I wanted to protect my little brother," Rayshun McDowell, who battled the animal in the front yard of his home, told The Charlotte Observer in an interview posted on the newspaper's website Tuesday.
The fox bit Rayshun in the leg Sunday in Kingstown, a town about 80 kilometres west of Charlotte, but the 61-pound boy held the animal down for more than a minute.
"I looked out the window and Rayshun had the fox by the neck and was pushing it into the ground," said his mother, Shinda Linder. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing."
Rayshun's stepfather, Ryan Thompson, pulled the boy off the animal and kicked it. A neighbour fired a handgun three times but the fox continued to advance.
Thompson, wearing a cast because of a broken leg, said he used a stick and his crutch to beat the fox to death.
Animal control officials said Tuesday that test results confirmed the fox had rabies, which is fatal unless treated before symptoms appear. Rayshun is undergoing treatment.
"Rayshun was really calm and wasn't upset," his mother said. "I couldn't believe he would do something like that. He was so brave, and I was a wreck."
Haha, I was thinking about that Seinfeld episode while I was reading too.
I'm so annoyed with myself that I missed this reference!! Which episode was this?
The Glasses:
George's eyeglasses are stolen at the Health Club and he needs a new pair. He goes to see Kramer's friend to get a thirty percent discount because Kramer helped him break his addiction to sugar. Elaine is bitten by a dog and then she becomes afraid of them, and the possibility that she may have rabies. While not wearing his glasses, George thinks he sees Jerry's girlfriend, Amy, kissing Jerry's cousin, Jeffrey, who apparently has a "horse face". Jerry decides to visit Jeffrey to figure out if it's true. Jerry doesn't know what to think of George's uncanny ability to see while "squinting". George finally decides upon a new pair but is distressed to hear that he bought a pair of women's glasses made by Gloria Vanderbilt. George manages to trade his frames with a blind man's uncomfortable ones. With his vision back, he realizes that it was not Amy kissing Jeffrey, but a woman petting a horse. The episode ends as we see George's glasses right on top of the lockers in the Health Club.
Elaine goes to the hospital because she's afraid she has rabies and there is a brief, but hilarious exchange between her and her foreign doctor:
DOCTER: Okay.
ELAINE: Okay? That's it? I don't need a shot?
DOCTER: Not shot, dog bite.
ELAINE: No, no, no. I know I wasn't shot. Do I need a shot?
DOCTER: Not shot, dog bite. Woof woof, not bang bang.
