Oliver Perez to the 15 Day DL

Postby AllStar215 » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:33 pm

The Mets plan to place Oliver Perez on the DL and call up Jason Vargas to start Tuesday's game against the Rockies.
Perez is sidelined with lower back soreness. He'll be eligible to return from the DL right after the All-Star break and should be ready then. Jul. 2 - 9:02 pm et

Starting Sunday against the Reds at Shea....

"As the Mets look forward to the second half of the season, they received some good news Tuesday when Oliver Perez cruised through a four-inning rehab stint for their Gulf Coast League affiliate.

Perez was sent to Port St. Lucie last week after he was put on the disabled list July 3 with a stiff lower back. The lefthander was scratched from one turn in the rotation because of the injury and also bounced from a rescheduled start two days later.

The move is retroactive to June 26, his last start against the Cardinals, and if there are no more setbacks, he will face the Reds on Sunday at Shea. Perez allowed two hits Tuesday, struck out seven and did not walk a batter in the 49-pitch outing.

The Mets limped into the All-Star break off a 5-6 road trip that also cost them two members of their rotation. Jorge Sosa was placed on the DL after suffering a hamstring strain June 30 in Philadelphia and Perez was scratched from the following day's start against the Phillies. Only then did the Mets reveal that Perez had complained of a stiff back that also forced him to miss the July 3 start against the Rockies.

When the season resumes Thursday at Shea, Orlando Hernandez will face Bronson Arroyo in the series opener against the Reds, followed by John Maine vs. Aaron Harang on Friday and Tom Glavine vs. Matt Belisle on Saturday. Perez is penciled in to oppose Kyle Lohse on Sunday. "
