unlikely to have much impact. Crisp's injury isn't serious and he's been swinging the bat well. This appears to be more so just a "cup of coffee" for ellsbury. In his prime he won't be a great hitter but is extremely talented defensively....too bad they don't give you points for that
I think his value would be in his speed... the talk is of him becoming that much needed leadoff hitter at some point in the future. Thats just what was being talked about on NESN, I don't know if it was speculation, or if they got it from somewhere. But on his second at bat, he hit a grounder to short, and was able to out run Young's throw, so he is pretty fast. Right now, I don't see him taking over for Crisp, unless that injury is more serious than they are letting on.
His main asset is speed and average. Projected as the 2008 Red Sox centerfielder. Compared to a young Johnny Damon. On that grounder, it was just a routine grounder, that Ellsbury just plain beat out. He was timed at 3.9 up the line. Gathright's a 4.0 so that ain't bad. Ellsbury runs a 4.27 40 and Michael Young (the one that fielded the grounder) mentioned to the boston media after the game, that he wasn't aware that the Sox called up Carl Lewis. That being said, imn my opinion, he's of little or no value this year. Most of the info above was stated on WEEI in Boston today.
He just ran home from 2nd on a wild pitch. If he gets hot, I could see him being of some use. It doesn't hurt to have a guy like that on the bases if he is hitting well. He's 2 for 2 with a SB tonight...
I agree. Not a bad night, 2 for 2 with two walks, a stolen base, and scoring from 2nd on that wild pitch. If this guy continues to perform, its definitely going to create a problem for Coco. Tonite's performance tops any game Crisp has played in that I've seen.
