Pedro Martinez threw to hitters Tuesday for the first time since rotator cuff surgery last fall.

Martinez, originally expected to just throw in the pen again, threw 45 pitches to minor league hitters. He might be on track to begin a rehab assignment right around the All-Star break.

From Rotoworld:

Mets transferred RHP Pedro Martinez from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.
This opens up a 40-man roster spot for Jeff Conine. It'll have no effect at all on Martinez's potential return from shoulder surgery.

So when is he back?

He was so far ahead of schedule to start the season that its disappointing to see him nowhere near NY at the end of August. He pitched well his last outing (5 IP, no ER), but has a "neck thing" that will keep him out of the bigs for a little bit yet. He wants to come up now. I'm not sure keeping him on my roster all season long is going to pay off.

Man, I dunno that I'd be counting on much help in ratios from Pedro... I'm in a similar situation, and I'm worried about starting him too soon.
