How Real is Guthrie?

Postby StringerBell » Thu Jun 21, 2007 11:03 pm

Here are Guthries stats thus far:

INN GS W L K ERA WHIP
81.7 10 4 1 56 2.42 0.894

He was awesome in A ball one year, but then had 3 rough seasons in the higher leagues. He had a nice year in AAA last year though ( .315 ERA 1.232 WHP in 123.3 innings.)

I watched his last 2 starts on TV --- he looks pretty good. I know he wont keep this up, but how realistic is it to hope for Sub 3.50 ERA and Sub 1.25 WHP when all is said and done?
.....ain't nobody got nothing to say about a 40-degree day. ...

His peripherals _this_ year mostly match up with his current numbers.(His era will rise some because of his babip, but its expected value is still around 3.2-3.3)(elite level walks, 4.5:1 k/bb, low hr rate, decent gb rate)

The big difference is his walks, his walk rates were bad to horrible for most of his career previously. His increased control has translated into significantly less walks, and slightly less hr rate. If he retains his control I think hes got a good shot at continuing to be a very solid option. If his control falls back to his previous levels his era and whip will shoot up like a rocket.

I think he's also had some favorable match-ups, but you also can't dispute how well he's done against good teams as well (Boston). With Kaz and Felix tanking, he's become my #2 SP. I'm just going to ride him out until he starts to implode.

hes had a couple favorable matchups, but pitching(and pitching really well at that) against boston in fenway, at the angels in anaheim, and against powerful teams like the rockies and bluejays says something about the kid. i caught the game he pitched against the angels and boy does have some filthy pitches. that 93-95 mph fastball has some serious bite on it.

9 quality starts in a row. since hes become a starter he hasnt given up more than 3 earned and he only did that once. i got some high hopes for the kid to be a solid starter here on out
ummm lets go angels? :)
