Anyone know why the A's did this? I guess he was a little peeved that they waited two days to take him off the DL (waiting to see what is up with Chavez) but this seems out of the blue.

Me too, but Jones value is pretty low, don't know that we can get any worthwhile bullpen help with him without packaging him with a good prospect.

Might this mean the A's are thinking about keeping Cust around to play OF when Piazza returns?

They are going to keep him around but I don't know how much time he will see in the OF. Piazza is delaying his return so he can build up some arm strength and play catcher here and there and let Cust DH.

I think Swish, Buck, and Kotsay will get most of the playing time and the rest will be filled in depending on who has the hottest bat - Kendall, Piazza, Cust, or Johnson - or who needs rest. I think they informed Bradley he would be sharing a lot of playing time and he didn't like it. Kind of like Witasick - he wasn't happy with his role so they let him go.
