Good for him.

I liked him enough as a player and obviously he has garnered the respect of the baseball world with the job he did last year in FLA. I hope he finds a job that actually has upside.

I do hope however, that he is not holding out for the Yanks job as he most likely won't get it.

Nobody can turn that team around at this point. It's in dire need of a makeover.

Good move by Girardi. A better opportunity (Yankees?) will present itself after the season.

The Orioles need help, but a team with tradition like that has the potential to be great once again. You've got some good young players in Markakis, Bedard, and Roberts. Granted they could really use another great starting pitcher. Also a power hitting 1b (Teixeira). But I don't think they're as bad as many think. Find a way to get Teix without giving up Markakis or Bedard (Cabrera + Gibbons, something along those lines) and then in the offseason go after starting pitching pretty heavily. Also trade Baez to the Cubs for J. Jones.

A lineup like this could win some ballgames, even in the AL East (ignoring DH):
Roberts
Markakis
Teixeira
Tejada
R. Hernandez
Jones
Mora
Patterson

Edit, just noticed the Milton Bradley thread and think he'd look nice in the lineup somewhere, when he's healthy anyway. You could get him for a bag of peanuts, too.

Why will he most likely not get the Yanks job? Seems like it's between him and Mattingly, and Girardi has more experience.

That was a little overstated on my part. I'm not sure Mattingly will get the job, if there is an opening, either. I am not so sure however, that Torre losses his job. Between those two scenarios, Girardi getting the job seems unlikely but, like you said, he has more experience than Don. But as others have pointed out, the Marlins were a completely green team. It has been postulated that Mattingly would be better at handling the big egos in NY. I am not sure I agree but Girardi does seem a little young to get the reins. As has been previously noted, he played with a few guys still in pinstripes.

Write it down; he'll be managing the Reds in '08.

Why would Girardi want the Orioles job -- a mess by all standards -- when he's still getting paid by Florida and is likely to get plenty of managerial offers before the start of next season? Unless he was really passionate about managing now, this was a good move. ;D
