I say trade him. They have good pitchers coming up like Garza and Slowey, and Liriano should be able to help out alot as well. But the Twins just cant pay him. If they do pay him, they wont have money to buy ANYONE else, and their cheap Free Agents haven't exactly panned out.(White, Batista, Cirillo) But look at it this way, they have the reigning MVP, Cy Young winner, Batting Champ, a Gold Glover in Center having an All Star year and one of the Best Bullpens in baseball with the most dominating closer(arguably), and they are still only 34-34 and 6.5 games back. They need a change. They are always known for being the scrappy "team" type that doesn't have alot of talent. Now, they have the All Stars, and they aren't winning. I say trade Johan away and get those role players back that they had when they won.
Is pushing for President Obama to pass a law requiring all citizens to be Chicago White Sox fans and make October 1st "White Sox Day" where we all dress as our favorite player. It maybe socialist, but I don't care.

Why trade the only real sure thing in your rotation when you're still in contention?

I don't believe that. With the added money stream they will be getting soon with the new stadium they should be able to pay Johan without hurting the rest of the team.

Is it true that the new stadium is outdoors?
If so, I don't know how much "extra" money the Twins will be expecting. That stadium will be a ghost town in April I would think, that's even if they do get to actually play a game. Maybe there is extra TV money coming in or something. I know they are getting solid chunk for the season package deal that just went down, but that couldn't be more than 10 million a year per team.

I cannot see the Twins paying Santana, Morneau and Hunter what it is going to cost to keep them, and still fielding a competitive team.
The closer he gets to free agency, his trade value actually goes down.

I doubt they do anything right now, but during the offseason I wouldn't be shocked to see a trade for Johan go down.
I hope to heck it is not the Mets.

The thing with the stadium is that with the Metrodome, the Vikings get a big cut of the revenue generated by the Twins. The Vikings own the luxury suites for example which is a major source of income. It's almost impossible for the Twins to generate much money while they play there. The Twins won't have those problems when they move to the new stadium.

Ok gotcha
The Padres were in a similar situation at Qualcomm, with the Chargers having control over the stadium..

The Mets would give up Martinez, Gomez, and Pelfrey for Santana. Or at least they should. I would not be upset one iota if Boston gave up Ellsbury, Buchholz, and Lester for him.

That said, I think he plays out his contract in a Minnesota uniform. They have enough pieces to contend in a tough Central every season.

I was initially going to respond that, but his argument is good enough that we can't just boil it down to that. However, the Twins have a lot of young prospects who are still developing, and I think once they mature the Twins will be a force.
