Not yet. I picked him up and I havent started him for either of his starts cause I think its gonna take him a while to get stretched out. Im gonna give him at least another 3 starts before I jump ship.
He's too good of a talent to give up on yet...plus he's still on pitch counts. I think he'll be solid post-ASB...from a selfish stand point...he better be solid post-ASB...I dropped Andrew Miller to get Billingsley when it was reported that Miller was getting sent back down to the minors (only 2 BN spots in a DEEP league)...DOH!
actually he has 2 starts remaining before the All-Star Break, At home vs San Diego and at home vs Florida. If he dosent pitch well against those crap offenses at home, I'll drop him again.
I was never on the bandwagon with this one, because I've watched him for a while. Being on a pitch count should IMPROVE his performance rather than make it suffer, because he should be able to focus within the 70 count limit. At least, that's one argument so I don't see how that could make him do worse...
The one glaring statistic to me is the walks. That was hig big problem as a starter last year and something he seemed to correct during his bullpen stint. But now the second he works himself back into the rotation, he starts walking guys again. Maybe he's just not mentally ready to be a starter.
Here's a theory, though. When you've got a guy like Lowe or Penny throwing tricky, off-speed stuff at you all night and then you face a Billingsley or Broxton out of the bullpen, it's really hard to adjust and catch up to their heat. But you can't overpower guys all night long, and maybe that's Billingsley's problem - trying to overpower. I haven't caught any of the games, though, but would be interested to hear opinions (other than pitch count) on why he's having trouble.
I think he is a much better pitcher coming in out of the bullpen, seems the pressure of starting the game gets to him, where as coming in in relief or long relief, he seems more comfortable. I think LAD should throw him back in the bullpen and start Hendrickson (4 Innings) and then bring in Billingsley (2-3 Innings)... seems like a decent 1-2 punch. Then of course you have Broxton and Saito to finish it up.
