As of right now Haren.
I also believe Kelvim Escobar should be tossed into the conversation on AL starter. He's having a great year, and if he pitches a great June he could have a shot at it also.

Haren- 6-2, sub 1.70 ERA, sub 1 whip... Beckett, 8-0, 2.95 ERA, 1.05 whip

The stats don't lie, Haren's having a better year... But factor in that Beckett plays for the Boston Red Sox and nobody west of Ohio knows anything about the Oakland Athletics... and you've got Josh Beckett as your AL Starter ;D

I'm not saying Beckett's bad, because he's been awesome this year, but Haren deserves it but he won't get it because nobody knows anything about him.

Haren deserves it but Beckett will likely get the nod. Though skill and ability matter, it's still a popularity vote. If you play for a big team you'll get votes, deserving or not. Same reason why Lo Duca will start over Martin.

In that case, I'd say the same for Fausto Carmona. and you'd also have to mention Lackey.

Carmona, Lackey, CC and Escobar could all contend with solid Junes - or slips by Haren/Beckett. Even Gaudin has a chance, I suppose - (if the Anaheim and Cleveland busses break down on the way to the game.)

Manager gets to pick the SP, correct? So then its not a "popularity vote" because the manager gets to pick whoever he wants. I think Beckett will still get it, especially if he only has 1 or 2 Ls by the time the All-Star break comes around (managers will look at W/L instead of ERA, WHIP, etc., as wrong as that is....)

I'm going to add to the consensus and say that without a doubt Haren deserves it over Beckett even though they are both having amazing years. I also agree that Beckett will most likely get the nod as his record is more aesthetically pleasing and he pitches for the Red Sox.

Boo East Coast Bias.

Haren's at a .205 BABIP. Leading the league by a bunch. He was at .290 in '05, .292 in '06. He will regress - possibly by the A-S break.

It's not always about East Coast bias for the ASG, because ESPN doesn't choose who starts. Remember last years starters? Brad Penny and Kenny Rogers? It will go to Haren if his rest routine allows him to pitch.

yeah... there's no way his era stays this low, though he should still be a very solid pitcher even after his "regression".
