The "new" ranking, as you guys are calling it, is just based on this years stats. It's not supposed to be a forecast of the player's value at all, merely an indicator to show who's done what so far for whatever period you choose to look at (month, year, week, etc).
The O-rank is supposed to be the player's value. Many sites don't try to do an updated overall ranking of each player during the season, as it's hard to know when to stop calling good/bad performance a streak and when to begin changing that player's value and how much to change it. At first I think I remember o-rank being the pre-season rank only. Then several years ago Yahoo started changing it, but would have these HUGE swings in the O-rank if a player got hot for a month. Then they went the other way and wouldn't change value much at all during the season when a Jake Peavy or a Pujols came on the scene. Now I think they're pretty decent at doing it, it's a lot harder to do than you think when you have to change rankings on the fly and then publish them to everyone on Earth. I take it all with a grain of salt, of course, because we should be using the data from experts to help us make our own opinions of player value.
And yeah, it looks like they've changed the o-ranks once this year in early may. I'm hoping they'll do it again soon. I can't wait until my boy Sheffield gets into the top 30 o-rank.

O-Rank is a combination of statistical (over multiple seasons) and subjective data. However, it is safe to say that the higher end of the rankings is dominated by subjective criteria. I honestly don't know how often our experts update those rankings.
For me as a fantasy manager, I'm not likely to make personnel decisions based on a single criteria. Personally, I almost *like* when the O-Rank doesn't update, because then I have two very different measures: - If I sort by rank, I can see who IS doing well - If I sort by O-Rank, I can see who was EXPECTED to do well
Both of which can be very interesting pieces of information, especially when combined. I still sometimes sort by O-Rank to find guys who might be injured, or otherwise got off to a slow start, but who may still have value. And I regularly use the statistical rankings in evaluating players. The 'Ranks' tab on your team page is really good for doing trending and comparisons. That tab was formally hiding down under the 'Extras' tab that we recently removed.

That's exactly what I do. I see who's overachieving and who's underachieving.

Agreed. I use both Rank and O-Rank when looking for buy-low trade opportunities. And, I really wish trade offers on Yahoo would either display the current Rank instead of the O-Rank by default, or display neither. I'd much rather my offers been seen initially with their current rank rather than their O-Rank.
